What makes a press-ready perfect bound file

01

How perfect binding works

Interior pages are stacked, the spine edge is milled, and a wrap-around cover is glued on with durable PUR (polyurethane reactive) adhesive to form a clean, square spine. The result is a professional, bookstore-style finish ideal for magazines, catalogs, annual reports, manuals and paperback books.

02

Page count and size

Total pages run in multiples of 2, with a minimum of 24 interior pages plus a 4-page cover and no fixed maximum. Finished sizes run up to 12 by 9 inches, down to a minimum of 4.5 by 5.5 inches on the bound edge, with a minimum thickness of 1/16 inch. Pick your size and page count in the price calculator.

03

Spine and cover setup

We calculate the spine width from your page count and paper, so you do not have to. Supply the cover as its own file. If you have art or text that crosses onto the spine, send the outer and inner cover as separate spreads so everything aligns.

04

Mind the spine margin

Because a perfect bound book does not lie flat, content near the spine can disappear into the binding. Keep text and important artwork at least 1/4 inch from the spine on every page, and pull inner-margin images back to compensate.

05

Crossovers

A crossover is an image that runs across the spine from one page to the next. Avoid placing faces or key text in the crossover, since the spine can make them look broken or illegible. For critical crossovers we recommend a hard proof to check alignment.

06

Color and resolution

Build everything in CMYK so on-screen color matches the press. Convert RGB and Pantone before export, place images at 300 dpi at final size, embed or outline fonts and flatten transparency. Export a single press-ready PDF (PDF/X-1a or X-4 work well).

Add your artwork

  1. Place your design on the artwork layer, using the template layer as a guide.
  2. Keep text and key art 1/4 inch from the spine so nothing is lost in the glued edge.
  3. Supply the cover as its own file, as a spread if art crosses the spine.
  4. Pull full-bleed art 1/8 inch past trim, remove template guides, and export single pages as one press-ready PDF.

Your questions, answered

Perfect bound books use a multiple of 2 total pages, with at least 24 interior pages plus a 4-page cover. There is no fixed maximum, though very high page counts need heavier consideration so the spine holds. For shorter books, saddle stitch is usually more economical.

We calculate the spine width for you based on your final page count and paper stock. If you want to print a title or art on the spine, let us know and we can confirm the exact spine dimension for your design.

Send interior pages as single pages in reading order within one PDF. Supply the cover as its own file, as single pages, unless your design crosses the spine, in which case send the cover as a spread.

Yes. Crossovers can look great, but keep faces and key text out of the spine area since perfect bound books do not open completely flat. For important crossovers, order a hard proof to confirm alignment.

Finished sizes run up to 12 by 9 inches, down to a minimum of 4.5 by 5.5 inches on the bound edge, with a minimum thickness of 1/16 inch. Choose your size, including custom sizes, in the price calculator.

Yes. We use PUR adhesive, which is strong, holds up to temperature swings and is recyclable, so your finished book stays an eco-friendly choice.

Send your files, we will handle the prep.
